D-U-M-B, everyone's accusing me

The note inside the house made it clear to Cowlitz County sheriff's deputies that they had the right place: "Do not open door & let anyone in! Stolen Stuff visable."

from the great state of Washington. via QuizLaw.

Cryptic

Today I couldn't figure out what Solvij meant when she was talking about the orphanarium where I used to work. Then I realized she meant the shelter. I would take her there with me.

A case of Christian Reconstructionism

at work. An American Christian Reconstructionist/businessman was arrested in Uganda after police found illegal guns and ammo at his house. Speculation, based on his past activities, is that he's involved in forming a new Christian political party in Uganda. This Talk to Action post has great links in the body and in the comments section to stories about the African evangelical/political mix.

The slightly hysterical

"Invictus," by William Ernest Henley.

Annotated by me.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
***My God, he's in a tent!***
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
***Are you an atheist or not? Make up your mind!***

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
***Sure, I believe you, you big baby.***
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbow'd.
***He's concussed but doesn't know it yet.***

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
***Life sucks, then you die.***
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
***Once an idiot, always an idiot.***

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
***The part many find inspring.***

Underground in Portugal

Portugal has a ban on pet ferrets.

"We still live in the shadows and every time I see a police car parked near my house I think, this is it, they are coming for my ferrets."

Washington state passes anti-bestiality law

"The fact is, we had a gaping hole in our criminal statutes." So said Sen. Adam Kline. Protecting animals from human freaks is a fine idea, although maybe humans should also be protected from inane legislators.

"It's really a bill that will protect animals, who are innocent, by the fact that they can't consent," said Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, the bill's prime sponsor. "We have a good deal of our population wanting to protect innocent animals from any cruelty."

Ugly phrases

One description of sexual battery:

Acts with the intent to cause a harmful or offensive contact with an intimate part of another, and a sexually offensive contact with that person directly or indirectly results.

This is worse:

Acts with the intent to cause a harmful or offensive contact with another by use of his or her intimate part, and a sexually offensive contact with that person directly or indirectly results.

The various intimate parts as defined in the California Civil Code here.

When you read the words

"And then there's" so and so, you can assume you're going to read about some nonconformist.

"I gave my name as Bobby Mister. So now, clerks say, 'Thank you, Mister Mister.' Some of them get it, some don't. And some are just puzzled, knowing something is going on but they can't quite figure it out."

This might be an example of sarchasm.

Cooking is noble

a lot of the time. But then there's this sort of cooking. Cooking with mobile phones. And for those with a lot of time on their hands, you can try preparing Pruno.

Same old news?

Studying the Bible too much could make you lose your faith. That's what happened to Bart Ehrman, who wrote "Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why." The story is not so new: that repeated copying of the Bible meant  mistakes. Ehrman argues that there were also deliberate changes, including changes that reflect the copiers' opinions about theological disputes. Given human nature, is there any doubt that this sort of thing happened? Not in my mind.
