Death

I haven't had a death post in a long time, but this is an interesting piece from the Revealer on how Gonzales v. Oregon is being (mis)represented in the media. And how the focus on physician-assisted suicide misses the real question: how do we and the people we love prepare to die.

So why have we been led so far astray? Byock attributes some of the blame to the Catholic Church and its right-to-life contingency, calling them "woefully irresponsible" in only giving "half a stance." Instead of telling us what a morally wholesome way to die would be, they have only stated what they are against.

"The Pope says it is immoral to take away Terry Schiavo’s feeding tube, but he forgot to finish the sentence and say what a morally acceptable way would be for her to die. What happens when she aspirates? When she gets pneumonia? Do we put her on a ventilator? For how long?"

Other articles about the case worth checking out are here, here, and here.

Creep out time

The Chairman of the Christian Coalition in Oregon, Louis Beres, has been accused of molesting some women back when they were kids. Editor and Publisher describes the story, published in the Oregonian and also followed-up here. Here's a real creepy part:

In a statement on the coalition's Web site today, Beres denied any criminal conduct and said he wanted to "reconcile" with those making the accusations, if he can find out who they are. "I have asked The Oregonian to provide the information so I might proceed as the Bible tells each of us to proceed," he wrote.

Loaves and goldfishes

You'd think people might figure out that mixing "Fear Factor" and youth ministry could be a bit of a problem. The folks at the First Assembly of God Church in Alabama thought that swallowing live goldfish would be a great way to face their fears.

"We need to be realistic about what the Bible says about fear and not be afraid to share our faith in school," youth minister Anthony Martin told the TimesDaily in a story Thursday. "We can't let that fear rule our lives."

Martin said the ministry's participants are between the ages of 14 and 21 and that they had to get their parents to sign a waiver to be involved.

"Through this ministry, kids are surrendering their lives to Jesus and developing a deeper relationship with Jesus," he said.

It also seems strange to me that the grand prize winner of this series of activities gets $250 cash. What would Jesus say?

Stranger than fiction

There's a phone poll up on ABC News about what people thought were the causes of Hurricane Katrina. There are charts of  the religious and demographic breakdowns.

The strangest response was in the "non-religious" category. Apparently, 17% of the non-religious think that the hurricanes were a "deliberate act of God."

Lord of the prance

Amusing review of Michael Flatley's new show, which is all about Irish history.

Flatley's grand entrance was followed by the arrival of the Vikings (dancers wearing menacing helmets), then the British (dancers wearing menacing wigs). Then the show moved to the horrors of British occupation: a dance dedicated to Bloody Sunday, with a tank snarling on the video screen behind the performers. The act produced a single moment of levity: Flatley appearing onstage as a priest, which sent the orchestra section into convulsions.

Small town life

It's kind of scary and I hope it's not a trend. I've noticed an old couple (over 70's) driving a Hummer. OK, how could I not notice them?
